Default Drive without rear drive shaft

Hi,
I have a 1999 XJ diesel manual with command trac, I have removed the rear drive shaft, is it safe to drive in 4H as Front Wheel Drive only or will it do damage?
Thanks

Not sure about damage but the transfer case is a wet yoke so it will throw fluid everywhere. How far do you have to drive ?

I have seen it done on toyota hiluxe's but they use a flange style uni attachment for the rear driveshaft not a slip yoke but the system is durable enough to operate full time.

What transfer case is that in XJ? I drove with just front driveshaft in my TJ for a month while I waited for a replacement rear driveshaft parta. Rear driveshaft was completely removed. It caused no dramas or "splashes" of fluid. Depends on whether their is a seal on the rear output shaft or not on the transfer case.

The diesel runs a np231 from memory. I pulled my rear shaft out once to try and trouble shoot a problem and after the Test driver there was shit everywhere

TJ had NP231as well. But I know earlier NP231s in YJ were not sealed like TJ ones. Maybe some XJ ones are like that too. A photo would be very helpful from OP.
