The sensor is located in the top of rear diff and reads off a ring bolted to the crown wheel.
My problems come from a loose connection in the plug on the top of diff as well as crud built up on sensor. A 10mm spanner is all that is needed to remove it and clean it and check the connections in plug, I had to squeeze the female connections in a bit.

All good now. The diff sensor was stuffed. $110 bucks from jeep Australia, I checked the wires leading to the sensor for Damage but there wasn't any issues. All up it took ten minutes to swap it out and replace it.

Seems to be a common issue here. My 05 CRD has been playing up for a while now. Usually a bump in the road will do it. ABS and Brake light come on, odometer (not speedo) stops working. Crawled underneath and played around with the sensor plug at the top off the diff. I have a long range tank which made this task a real PITA.
All I did was make it worse. Ended up breaking the plug that pushes into the sensor (grrrr) and now just backing out of the shed trips the lights.
Going to have another crack at it before I order a new plug and harness.

It's more likely a sensor itself. If you have ESP in the KJ, could be one of the sensors out at the wheel hubs, I'm used to these in the front, but now with my 2006 KJ with ESP, I see I have wiring running out to each rear wheel hub, also, seperate brake lines to each rear .

Generally when the Diff sensor goes, the speeedo needle gets "Floaty" gives a reading but floats up and down lots (20-40kms) .

I had an ABS sensor die on my old 2004 and it gave the ABS light warning all the time.
