Default Selling 96 XJ - Whats it Worth???

Thought I would start here, I am selling my XJ, have had it since 1999 and has served me well, but really dont need it anymore.

It has ARB bullbar, Rhino heavy roof racks, Trans oil cooler and gauge OME suspension 2" lift, RED in colour, rego ran out end of May this year. I am not chasing big $$$ for it want it to go to someone who needs it for spares or wanting a project starter.

Would 2K be to much, anyone here able to help me price it, I really just want it gone.

Make no mistake it needs work the interior roof liner has dropped, paint is pretty good but clear starting to fade in spots, typical of a car its age.

Any suggestions appreciated

Cheers Grant

I have 3 x '96, which cost me $1500, $450 and $2K respectively

and keep an eye on prices, partly cause one of my sons thinks he might want to buy one

$450 = no rego, specs match yours..but it did have a few faults, and I haggled a bargain

12mths reg is worth ~1k value on any car imo..obtaining a blue slip is highly undesirable in NSW

imo the sale price of an unreg '96 as described is between $700-1000

Not many '96 or earlier are advertised for over 3000

I agree with awg its hard to value them you see ones on carsales for stupid amounts of $
they are all old and have high kilometres and even if they have been looked after all their life things still get old I bought my XJ 6 years ago Cheap and Totally committed myself when I spent $3.5 on a gearbox rebuild maybe I should of bought another car instead of rebuilding the auto but I like my XJ and many years later and issues $ I the paint has faded etc it looks like a $1000 car but I know it ..................
and no one would pay that for it if its is mechanically sound unreg $1200 to $1500?

Thanks guys really appreciate it. Yeah I have thrown it up on gumtree for 2k, might adjust it I reckon.

I was doing similar replacing sensors, suspension bushes, getting rid of oil leaks, new radiator etc, even had it booked it for new interior and thought this is a money pit even all perfect still only 4K with rego and if lucky.

Was tossing around keeping it as a project and actually restoring it and keeping the rego paid up. But just not using it.

Thanks again appreciate the feedback. Think I will give it a bash at $1500

Interestingly to me, I found out their is a market exporting XJ parts overseas, specifically to Dubai

It was stated to me an XJ engine was worth $700, (going or not!) and rear end $300,,perhaps the gent was not truthful,
..his business was "taking vehicles away for scrap"...for very low price, I sold him a few

at that time, scrap metal price was very low

He was an Afghan, and had a large open rented dirt floor shed with fellow Afghans in sandals dismantling cars...he let me take a few parts I wanted for a few $, they would have been thrown away

I also met another fellow who specialised in sending Landcruiser parts, mainly to Africa. He was quite wealthy, and had some amazing tales

The "moral" of the story is a Jeep XJ is not worth nothing

btw, one day I was at my mechanic mates, he was happy, worked a bit with the Afghan fellow, they had taken away a broken down later model 4wd, which only had a duff fuel pump, and the same model was on Gumtree for ~$17K
