Default U0414 Code

Hi all
I'm currently chasing a problem with my wife's stock '16 JK 4 door overland (petrol V6 auto), and I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced the same.

The car has been refusing to shift out of first gear when I first start driving, though the CEL was not showing up. Additionally, when shifting into Drive or Reverse, the car will 'shunt' pretty heavily.

I did a bit of googling and found not much with that description, so plugged in my trusty OBD2 scanner (shitty bluetooth one I connect my phone to) and got a code: U0414 (Invalid Data Received From Four-Wheel Drive Clutch Control Module).

I cleared the code, but it keeps re-appearing, and I now have a CEL that won't clear either.

I've searched this code, and the only post I could find on this site was from a user 'baa baa black jeep' in 2014 which had no reply (http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/...t=U0414&page=5).

I've found a U.S. forum which posts suggest I need a new transfer case indicator switch (https://www.wranglerforum.com/f202/u...e-1558249.html).

To test this, I've shifted between 2H and 4H to check the 4x4 light comes on in the dash when it should, and it does. This to me suggests that part is fine.

Interesting side-note: after shiting into 4H then back into 2H, the car works as normal. No shunt when shifting into gear, no holding 1st for too long, etc.

Does anyone have any experience like this, or recommendations of where to head?

This is not my wheelhouse at all, but wouldn't the fact it works after you engage the part in question mean that it may actually be faulty? For whatever reason its initial condition is off or incorrect and causes grief, but shifting out of 4H and back into 2L resets it to where it should be at startup. Does the CEL clear after you shift into and out of 4H?

Again, never experienced this but if the code points in that direction and you have some action with that area when you play around with it, it is a good thread to pull. I am slammed at work lately but I wonder if there are any other tests to do with the TC indicator switch?

Hopefully a bump gets this some attention with a more relevantly minded Jeeper.

Good luck!

Hi mate
Thanks for the reply

I think you're right. I've driven the car a bit lately (usually I'm in my work ute, but COVID has me working from home a bit) and after my initial post where I found it worked after shifting 2wd-4wd-2wd, I don't seem to have run into the issue at all.

At this point my best guess is that 'exercising' that switch has got it to function properly again.
If this problem arises again I'll replace the switch and hopefully that'll be the end of it.

Hopefully if anyone runs into this issue in the future they'll have a place to start from here.

I've had a similar issue with my WK2 diesel Laredo selecting low range when the vehicle has been sitting overnight, hasn't been placed in low range for a few months or the transfer case isn't up to operating temp - I usually get an evic message to service 4WD system as it had difficulty selecting/engaging low range. I now place it in low range a couple of times a month once the transfer case is up to operating temp & everything is OK.

Cheers

What a pain in the ass! Thanks for the feedback though TR, sounds like I may have a similar issue. I may do the same thing with low range (the car is at about 60,000 k's and I don't think it's ever been in low range).
