Default New challenges with the XJ

1999 Cherokee 2.5 TD. Sometimes when I drive i get the Airbag light on, and the speedo and RPM gauge goes to zero. It can stay like that for a few seconds, or a few minutes. Then everything works again. The car still runs with no problems.

Is there anyone who has any idea what this is, and where the problem lies?

Hi, Have you tried to get any fault codes?

Either from an OBD2 Scan tool or you can read them off the odometer.

To read codes off the odometer

1. With ignition off press the hold the trip reset knob beside the odometer
2. Turn on the ignition (don’t start)
3. Release the trip reset knob

The odometer should count down through all the numbers and then if there are any codes they will display. Have a pen and paper ready.

Good luck

More likely it has to do with the cluster to harness connector .
You can try removing the cluster and remove connector at the back of it and wipe it of clean with "contact cleaner" spray from some electronics shops .
Sometimes you just have to bump the dashboard above the cluster and it comes good for a while but best to clean contacts .
There is a chance of solder joints on the cluster connector go bad (unlikely) but if it is than you will have to go on the solder joints with a soldering iron .

try sounding the horn, (and/or engaging cruise control)

an electrical part in the steering wheel called the clockspring can become faulty, causing odd symptoms, including above

That would have been my thought too.
