250km later...

I have drained the fuel filter several times. Last time (this morning) it was all water except for the last dribble. Also, when I started this morning and moved off the driveway (before drainimg) no power steering! It was because a fuel leak was lubricating the serpentine belt.

Drained the filter and restarted to find the leak. None! Can water (lower viscosity than diesel) cause a temporary leak? I cannot get it to leak again, so I can't fix it.

AAAAARRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!

Now the HP fuel pump has decided to leak. I don't know if that from the bad fuel or not. I've ordered the o-ring kit to put in it.

The weird bit is it ony leaks cold. It stops when it warms up.

You should flash thoroughly the fuel tank and change the fuel filter asap,

As for the pump I'd strongly recommend you, to send it over to a Bosch specialist Service Center.
They fixed mine (when it leaked from one of its head) and I tell you, it was worth the 250€ they charged me (new head gaskets and bolts in all three heads, leak test on a special electric motor machine with variable speed, etc).
I just took it out from the engine and went there with the pump on hand.

It just needs a seal kit. I'm getting healthy pressure, just it's leaking. The seal kit is around $30, and has been ordered. A rebuilt pump is over $500. The seal kit is easy to fit. The biggest challenge is cleanliness.

One question... I've seen it recommend to use a little engine assembly grease to hold the o-rings during assembly and for the initial lube. Is this a good idea? I was planning to crank the engine with the output pipe off to flush through fuel (and any stray crap) before the first start.

So, after the rebuild the pump has gone from a squirt out of the lower head to a one-drip-per-second out of the tell-tale.

I presume it's the shaft seal? What part number?

20-20 hindsight, I shoulda bought a rebuilt pump. Has anyone had experience with HiTech Diesel in SA?
