It is a Yank thing. I go over once a year to see the in-laws so I drive a few different vehicles. A lot have these. It’s for the same reason that a lot of them have column mounted gear sticks, to give you more room for your centre console, whether that’s for storing stuff, or cup holders. But with the electric park brakes that we have here in a lot of cars the Yanks are also starting to do the same thing.

Some Mercedes 4x4's used to have the foot brake, but like most else now probably gone to electric.

I do recall the Yank tank we hired in Hawaii decades ago so we could drive around the island in our cool shirts just like Hawaii Five-0 (the original cool show not the fake one) it had a column change on the wrong side so I always grabbed the blinker and a foot brake, huge car we could put a moped in the boot as well as our Esky.... we were cool aussie dudes for sure.............................. place was full of old Jeeps and Mustangs......

Toyota Aurions had a Foot activated handbrake, certain tear model F100 had a small lever you would lift up to activate the hand brake( it was either full on or full off no happy medium

Does the Toyota Kluger still have a foot-operated park brake? It always did have - the last one I drove was a 2018 model and it was still foot operated then. I don't think its changed.

Oh yeah, that bluddy handle under the dash was the most horrible thing ever, some small trucks had them as well, hated them.

We hired a Nissan Quashqai in NZ in January, that had a similar setup, just a little lever to flick up on the console, i forgot it many times.
