P1687 is a new one to me, could be as simple as JeanLuke has said, sometimes just reseating connectors can help identify the problem.

WJDiagPro is the best investment you can make, even if you don't know how to drive it. It'll make clearing all codes possible.

You didn't say where the black smoke was chuffing from? Exhaust? Around injectors?

oops sorry, Black smoke is from the exhaust. Not one of its usual habits LOL.

So it turns out that the problem was the gear shift selector PCB P0702 code and not the one the lube mobile thought it was. Thankfully auto elecy was able to repair a dodgy solder joint on the PCB and clean up the magnets and so far we seem to be good. For how long is anyones guess. interestingly enough the black smoke has stopped also now that it's not in limp mode thank goodness.
