Default Alternator just went bung.

Went to do the shopping on Saturday and just managed to park it in the car park and all the sensors went off with alarms going haywire and then it stopped dead in its tracks. Called Jeep Assist and they came out and verified it was the alternator. Must have died a few days before and it was just driving around on the battery only. No warning about any issues till it died.

So caught a taxi back home, got a spare battery out of the shed with some short battery leads, my wife drove me back in her car where I disconnected the main battery and drove the jeep back home on the spare. Charged them both up and reconnected the spare in parallel and drove it to my Jeep dealer in Noosa.

Now waiting on an alternator to arrive from Melbourne. Seems like I am getting my moneys worth out of the extended warranty I took out when I bought this Jeep.
Still waiting on parts to come from the USA for the intake manifold replacements, been about 8+ weeks now. Hopefully those will be in next week, so then my Jeep should be functional again in the next couple of weeks.

Usually the battery has been slowly dying over a long time which seems to effect the alternator .You don't pick it up because the alternator pumps out huge amps.Have had two of these on different diesel Overlands and both times was the battery which killed the alternators
Hopefully the insurance covers it

Hi Sunturf, I replaced the battery about 4 mths ago, the original was still good but it wasn't completely charging so I now suspect the alternator wasn't charging it up fully. That was the spare battery I used to get the Jeep home, it still keeps the voltage up at 12.8V but as it is 6.5 years old I thought I better replace it anyway, although I must admit it had a very good run. One of the longest lived batteries I have ever had. Pity they don't sell these original batteries as you can only get third party batteries when the originals die.

Anyway the warranty will cover the new alternator, just have to wait till it arrives from Melbourne so should get the Jeep back mid next week all going well.

Keep it for a camping battery to run your fridge from, will run it for days.

I had an alt fail in my overland also but at about 200 000k from memory. Although it's remotely possible a bad battery may antagonise the issue it generally a diode pack failure in my experience.

Although the op successfully link another battery to get it home be very careful. If you're diode pack shorts directly to ground it may attempt to start a fire for you.

Use the op's method just totally disconnect the alternator before trying to reconnect anything and straight away when the alt fails get the leads disconnected.

Johnson Control makes Mopar, Varta, Optima, Delka and others with plants in Europe, Mexico and China for AGM's. Exide is an Indian Company making batteries here in Adelaide, India, USA and AC Delco I believe are made in Saudi Arabia...... most of the others seem to be Chinese now as well.

Mine went at Kilcoy starting a trip back to Canberra in September. Limped to Elimba/Caboolture on the fridge battery. Got a new one via an auto electrician in Caboolture in 2 hours ($600) and took a bit over 2 hours to fit it. No real downside in an overnight with friends! 150,000kms - 2013 my14.
