Thanks a lot for the replies. Gosh it seems that this is a complete different car.

Looks like I better get an older Merc as a doner car this time. I just had a quick look and it looks like the transmission of the CRD version is also in the w210 (E-Class). This does not sound right since this car is build for completely different purposes.

But what about the suspension parts? Are at least the axles, springs, shocks and the drive shafts the same? What about Quadradrive?

Does anyone have a complete part list number of the components in this car? I really consider in getting then a Mercedes model, where i can harvest as much as possible in case some parts are failing / breaking.

The 2wd transmission has a different case from the 4wd transmission.

Merc oil pan, oil pump, intake manifold, exhaust manifold, head (it's missing the mounting point for the viscous heater) are different.

The shifter setup is different, no provision for low-range switch. And the TCU still needs reprogramming for different ratios.

More about WG diesel vs V8:
Hydro fan is different
Front springs are apparently heavier rate
3.55 gears vs 3.73 (Quadra drive carriers are the same though)
Front DS is the same length

If doing the conversion, your best bet is to have a donor Jeep. If searching for a spare engine, the Merc options can be adapted easily.

Thanks again.

Just to be clear, I do not want to do a conversion but instead buying a complete CRD model and then just keep as much as I can from the one I have and sell the remaining parts. The engine is in really good shape and has only 17K on the clock (the previous owner replaced it and I got it with 10K). I have several transfer cases (3) and 2 transmissions, AC compressor, radiator and much more. Obviously not much fits on the CRD. It even begs the question if it would be better getting a GQ or a Landcruiser instead.

Seems like a lot of work and cost to save a few dollars in fuel Joerg.

To be honest, I wouldn't even keep the factory transfer cases, NP231 swap gains some fuel consumption on anything but straight roads

I hear you and if it is about fuel consumption it would certainly not make sense. I am more about self sustainability, given where the prices of fuel is going and who knows what happens to our supply chain. Ultimately I want to produce my own fuel, and diesel is just easier to produce than petrol.
