Unhappy Crankshaft Sensor failing or something else...?

Hey all,

Jeep XJ 1998 over here. Had an issue of stalling while driving. Was stuttering almost like no fuel and then turned of. Cranked and turned over a few times, would instantly turn off when shifted to drive. Now, No crank, no life. It was previously Towed to a mechanic for the same thing, they replaced the CPS and battery and given it the all clear.

Could it be a faulty CPS they've installed? I've read the non Mopar can go pretty fast. Finding a Mopar CPS in stock is a challenge however...

Looking for some help asap, thanks guys!

The check engine light is also on while cranking. It would be great for some guidance on this one 〰️

What code does it throw when the engine stops, do the key cycle check to read the code.

It has been my experience that the Crank Position Sensor generally fails when hot, out on the trail/road tipping cold water down the back of the engine to cool it permits the engine to be restarted, this is a good indication of a faulty component.

The service manual also describes how to back probe the detector whilst turning the engine over manually, alternatively there is a tutorial @ https://easyautodiagnostics.com/jeep...ckp-sensor-1#4

FWIW I installed a non-OEM CPS (all I could obtain) over 5 years ago, I did experience a few odd symptoms return although that turned out to be the Cam Position Sensor (under distributor), which failed completely eventually.

Thanks for the replies.
I don't have the tools to diagnose at hand, Jeeps is roadside at the moment.
If the cranking over and stalling when in Drive / intermittent stalling isn't typically a CPS - what else could it be?

I'm wondering if the throttle body / CCV system is all blocked up, or the fuel pump. Someone mentioned if the bellhousing is loose that can cause the stall when shifted to drive. Lots of roads to go down but quite hard to trouble shoot as it's not at home. And I'm not very mechanically experienced! I'm a bit reluctant to keep towing it back to the mechanic to fix the same thing to no success!

Hmm.

You mentioned the Cam sensor. If it shows similar symptoms and they've replaced the crank sensor and ignition packs but might be the Cam causing the grief...
