Hey mate,
You don’t need tools to do the key trick to retrieve codes.
It’s almost a necessity to pull your codes to identify the problem.
Do a google search on how to do it, and what the codes are, and post them up. Then we can help.
There are so many things is can be and it’s almost impossible to diagnose.
Anything from fuel pumps, cam sensors, crank sensors, ignition pack, coils, Neutral Safety Switch, injectors, fuel filter, TPS... the list goes on.
The cheap Chinese crank sensors can have a short life. Check the wiring as it could be rubbing near headers.
As your XJ is OBD2, a good dongle is a cheap and valuable tool that will save you thousands. You can use the free Torque app to read all your codes and other data.
Cheers,

So she turned over today. Just as I organised a tow! Of course.
Drove, up n down hills, so a bit of strain and it didn't stall. Turns over and goes even after stopping and turning off.
I'm stumped. What could it be that's making it so temperamental??
Thanks for the input on the way to solutions!
UPDATE// She stalled again. Organising a tow to the mechanics, they seem stumped at what's wrong with it also but they're maybe my best chance as I don't have any tools to get stuck into self diagnosing. I can direct them to check the fuel pump, CPS, Cam sensor etc and hope they can crack it.
The throttle body is also a good one to check. Again, id attempt this stuff myself but the jeep is just too unreliable to count on being able to drive it in / out of an apartment garage + I don't have any proper tools.
Sigh.

Thanks for that! Makes a lot of sense and I'll look into it as a tool to have, sounds very useful.
Some info / codes pulled from previous mechanic visits are:

Hey,
That’s a few codes.
Some of those should be cleared and fixed now.
I don’t see a replaced CPS in that work?
Anyway, once they recheck codes, they may have a better idea.
Sounds heat related which is usually crank sensor, cam sensor or coil related...
Cheers,

I've had to change the ignition coil on my last 2 Cherokees, they are bolted to the side of the engine block and due to imperfect ventilation under the hood they cook and eventually crack, this causes intermittent firing/reliability issues as well.
Both times uprated MSD coils were fitted without further issues.

Didn’t some of these early GC’s suffer from solder joint problems on the ECU connector area on the motherboard. I seem to recall a lot of discussion on US forums about intermittent engine shutdown due to the problem.
