Left field:

I had the same problem with the rear drivers side door in my pre-update XJ from new. The window switches are on the drivers side door.

The window would wind down OK but not up. It was outa warranty by the time I realised.

I thought it was a broken wire too.

I found that instead of pressing the button up, to take the window up (like all of the other windows), if pressed it diagonally up in a particular direction it went up! Could it be the switch itself?

I did not have the time to test it further but I tried 3 different switches when I fiddled around with it in the first place, none of them worked and I know that 2 of them were in my V8 and worked perfectly so I am almost certain that the switches are fine.
