I may have it wrong, but in my experience it self adjusts to the preset temp by applying heating or fan cooling, but in a hot cabin it can only maintain 20 if you turn auto or manual a/c on, you then hear the compressor kick in.
This thing the other day was a complete aberration, and even more perplexing was the vents being in facia (panel) position, not floor or defrost which are the only positions that apparently wake up a/c in the background to avoid fogging. Anyway, it's a first world issue, so not losing sleep over it!

. Everywhere we'd intended going had flooding so decided to put it back a month. Now still a mess out there and no real let up in sight, so looking like early '23. Coast in the meantime I think, not too bad down that way.
