Thanks drover. I'll check out the vacuum lines, and thanks for the tip on the crank case hose. Might look to replace it as it was effectively so flared at the end from being permanently stretched it wouldn't stay put, that's why I put the hose clamp on. A new one should have enough to hold it on.

Our turbo charged VM diesels of course have the air flow sensor in the tube just after the air box. So as you wrote after you cleaned the MAF it was better, so it may have been to do with the MAF being a tad dirty. If it hadn't been cleaned since new it quite likely would have needed a clean. But, the EGR does have input so it may have an issue too?
Yup this is pretty much my situation. It is the throttle body valve that sits on top. I updated my thread with some videos of it operating and can confirm, it is the problem. I was suspecting other components but it is clear now. The flap does not open and close in time in my case. It works, but the delay is the problem. Can work around it for now but looks like a throttle body replacement is on the cards to completely get rid of this issue in my case.
