whine in the diff
I would be sceptical, very sceptical.
I own a 97 XJ and have had probably the most memorable diff experience on the board even though I am the newest newbie
Yes I am the bloke that managed to snap my axle at the JAMBOREE last year, a achievement that I would like to forget
Anyhows I tried to get it fixed on the cheap BAD MISTAKE! It ended up costing me round $2600 (I could have bought a brand new diff complete from jeep for 3200), I bought a resleaved axle which are not worth a piece of $H!T. Round 300 bucks and they are crap!!!!!
I had it rebuilt the first time and got it back with a bad whine in it (luckily I had a bought a stuffed second hand diff for $200 as you will find out shortly)
I complained and the guy said he never took it for a test drive first (only replaced the axle) then aked if he could have the second diff and make one good one out of the two. I got the car back and it drove great.
I then got married 3 weeks later, then drove to surfers / Fraser for my honeymoon. On the way back the diff had a slight hum which you could bearly hear, by the time I got home it was deafening! I rang the mechanic (who was a friend) and told him of the problem his advice to me was I should SELL THE BLOODY CAR! Great advice!!!!!! (BTW the resleaved axle always leaked oil as well)
In the end frustrated I took it to a specialist. Look one up in your yellow pages and it should comes with a warranty. (The business that fixed it was called Central Coast Manual Gearboxes & Diffs) so when I say specialist it was basically a Diff only workshop.
He rebuilt the whole diff replaced all bearings including pinion & axle (which I previously bought anyhows but was stuffed with the drive to QLD) + the seals with labour for $600 (I spent more taking it to a mate twice!) He had to use the hemisphere out of the second hand axle as the original was r00ted!
I got the car back and it drove great with one problem, the resleaved axle still leaked oil out of the seal. I rang the bloke who just did the work and he told me he cannot understand it - he can only put it down to the resleaved axle (though he mic'ed it and it seemed to be fine) I finally bought a brand new axle from Ray Barker of Auto Alliance (Rancho) and the diff bloke charged me $80 to fit it and changed the axle bearing and sleave for free as it was still under his warranty.
I have not had one noise or oil leak since this was done. A valuable lesson is to take it to someone that has expertise in this area also if anyone wants to buy a brand new resleaved axle.....
I know I waffled on a lot to get my story out but believe me their is NO WEARING IN I believe your diff is WEARING OUT!!!!
