Default whine in the diff

Hi all
i have just had the diff re-built after smashing the right rear axle a couple of months ago. the axle shattered in the spline and expanded plitting the bearing and the conical shaped cog. anyway just had those parts and new piston and seals in the airlocker replaced. now when i go around a sweeping left hand corner with no power the diff whines?? the guy said that it was just wearing in but im a little sceptical at this answer and i think he is full of s%&t. any comment would be appreciated.

Default whine in the diff

My thoughts would be carrier bearing noise as the outer axle transfers load onto it. As it seems this was replaced I suspect there may be isufficient carrier bearing preload. This would allow the axles to move the crownwheel slightly & change the gear mesh. Check axle bearings 1st.
HTH. Let us know how it goes.

Default whine in the diff

wouldnt having wine in the diff make it taste funny? I had the carrier bearings in my diff replaced about 2 months after i bought it (i suppose thats how long banana skins last then), and the noise was a whining worn bearing noise, very noticable from in the cab, and eye watering from under the car.

Default whine in the diff

I would be sceptical, very sceptical.
I own a 97 XJ and have had probably the most memorable diff experience on the board even though I am the newest newbie
Yes I am the bloke that managed to snap my axle at the JAMBOREE last year, a achievement that I would like to forget
Anyhows I tried to get it fixed on the cheap BAD MISTAKE! It ended up costing me round $2600 (I could have bought a brand new diff complete from jeep for 3200), I bought a resleaved axle which are not worth a piece of $H!T. Round 300 bucks and they are crap!!!!!
I had it rebuilt the first time and got it back with a bad whine in it (luckily I had a bought a stuffed second hand diff for $200 as you will find out shortly)
I complained and the guy said he never took it for a test drive first (only replaced the axle) then aked if he could have the second diff and make one good one out of the two. I got the car back and it drove great.
I then got married 3 weeks later, then drove to surfers / Fraser for my honeymoon. On the way back the diff had a slight hum which you could bearly hear, by the time I got home it was deafening! I rang the mechanic (who was a friend) and told him of the problem his advice to me was I should SELL THE BLOODY CAR! Great advice!!!!!! (BTW the resleaved axle always leaked oil as well)
In the end frustrated I took it to a specialist. Look one up in your yellow pages and it should comes with a warranty. (The business that fixed it was called Central Coast Manual Gearboxes & Diffs) so when I say specialist it was basically a Diff only workshop.
He rebuilt the whole diff replaced all bearings including pinion & axle (which I previously bought anyhows but was stuffed with the drive to QLD) + the seals with labour for $600 (I spent more taking it to a mate twice!) He had to use the hemisphere out of the second hand axle as the original was r00ted!
I got the car back and it drove great with one problem, the resleaved axle still leaked oil out of the seal. I rang the bloke who just did the work and he told me he cannot understand it - he can only put it down to the resleaved axle (though he mic'ed it and it seemed to be fine) I finally bought a brand new axle from Ray Barker of Auto Alliance (Rancho) and the diff bloke charged me $80 to fit it and changed the axle bearing and sleave for free as it was still under his warranty.
I have not had one noise or oil leak since this was done. A valuable lesson is to take it to someone that has expertise in this area also if anyone wants to buy a brand new resleaved axle.....

I know I waffled on a lot to get my story out but believe me their is NO WEARING IN I believe your diff is WEARING OUT!!!!
