Default All TJ's are not the same!!

TJ's were sold in Australia from, say 97 to date. (I know that some were out in 96 too).

I have a 98 one but my mates 02 TJ sounds and drives different.

It seems to have a new muffler and engine mods. IMHO it is a definite improvement.

I know of the minor changes - lights, switches, rim designs etc.

Question: What was changed in the diffreent years and how , if at all, can we modify the earlier TJ's to match and exceed the 02 specs (esp engine bits).

If there is little difference, then a 96-97 TJ with high clicks is a cheap buy nowadays; espescially when you consider that many CJ's in good nick sell from between $15-20K?

correction many people ask for between 15k and 20k for a CJ I think it is ludicrus

anyway there is always some mall cruisers who pay that

The 4l engine has been upgraded over the years and not sure the exact dates but the new one have a multi coil desgin like the commodore v6 does and i think there are some other improvements too

you could just trade up to say 03 model but just changing things eg muffler, lift , tire types/sizes , shocks, engine tweaks. these all individually and together make changes to the way the jeep rides and performs. Atleast with a jeep if you don't like something you just change it ... it's what they're for.....

These are UK links but should be true for the most part

I've a new 2002 model and from what i can see, the only differences over the years have been the air intake grille on the bonnet. I paid $32,990 with air-con, towbar and on road costs. I thought it was a pretty good buy. A mate has a 2000 Renegade Hard Top and his is very noticeably quiet. Mine sounds like it's a monster (mine's standard), but his is as quiet as a barina (his is also standard). I think there must have been some less muffler or more engine work in the new models. My tojo mates say it sounds good when idling too!

The 03 Rubicon model looks bloody smick. Recon that would appeal to a few of ya..looks like a lot of the so called "serious" stuff is standard. Thats gotta save a few bucks in the long run.
