Default XJ vibrations

Can anyone help? My 98 Deisel XJ has developed a vibration through the body and drivetrain between 85 and 95 kph. It is a bit rougher than I remember at other speeds. I have replaced the rear uni joint. The rear pinion seal was leaking. The transfer end seems alright. Replaced both seals. Vibes still there no different. I have had the wheels balanced again. The XJ has standard springs with Polyairs fitted to the rear. The ride height is about 18 in at the rear and 17.5 in at front. The manual says these type of vibrations are likely to be caused by either uni joints or out of alignment of tailshaft.

Hey there xjoiler

I think a few of us have had similar experiences with our XJ's although mine is ULP not deisel. Couple of these links may help out. After all the checks mine still has a very slight wobble but no where near as bad as when I first bought the car. I'm learning to live with the 'death wobble' although its not actually that bad after I had the camber and toe in realigned and the wheels on car balanced.

Hope these discussion links help.

have the driveshaft balanced.. If you've thrown a weight.. that could be it. Got mine balanced (front) and it was WAY out!!

Just to add to that, my XJ had a terrible wobble between about 77 and 85 and it dissapeared after that. As I said the alignment, balance, camber and toe-in pretty much sorted it out.

Good luck

try a 2 degree tapered shim under rear springs to tild pinion housing up towards the transfere case, thereby reducing the universal joint rotation angle
Shim goes under springs with thick part to rear

pull your front driveshaft out and try the speed again, will eliminate if it front or rear shaft related.
