Default Unable to remove igniton key

Hello all,
Hoping that someone out there can help with a small problem. Key won't turn back far enough to allow me to get the ke out of the ignition switch..Does anyone have any ideas as to how I may rectify the problem.

Regards
Wayne

Some quick things to check:

* Auto is in P as key will not turn back to be removed unless it is.
* Check that you haven't gone one notch too far in the ignition - when you put the key in you turn it one way to start and you turn it the other to turn on accesories like stereo only.

This got me too the first time in my new XJ! But yeah, they are the two possibilities to prevent the key coming out...

If it is already in P move in backwards and forwards (just gently so you are still on P) a bit while you try the key again. If this works you might have a dirty neutral safety switch.

Problem has been fixed. Don't know if permanently. Ended up turning off ignition while still in drive, put lever into park and bugger me all was back to OK
Thanks for input

Having it on full steering lock as in hard left or right will lock it in place too unless you turn the wheel a bit harder against that lock.
