Default CJ chassis strength questions

Hi,

Just wanted to see if anyone could enlighten me as to the strength of the CJ chassis.
I have heard a rumour that it is a weak point and a lot of people building big CJ's start with a brand new chassis that is stronger than stock..

Is this true?
Can you reinforce the orginal chassis enough?
Is there an aussie source for replacement chassis?

I am referring to loads a chassis would see in competitions with something like dana60's or mog portals and 40's or 42's with a healthy v8 :mrgeen:

thanks

z

Hi Zack. The Cjs do have a weak chassic, but you can getreinforcing plates. If you are building a coil type suspension I dont think you will have a problem. the chassics are made to flex and they can crack at th nefront cross member and around the front springs rear hanger.
I have never had a problem with my chassics. I do have reinforcing plates as well (which we are making copies off) but i have had the need to install them yet. I think the reverse shackle helps alot.

I have also heard that gal chassics tend to crack alot.

Me and a mate are looking into building our own chassics aswell, I will keep you imformed aswell.

cheers MC

Is this true?

Yes but is part of the design to increase flex, not as much as the early willy's but the same idea

yes

Is there an aussie source for replacement chassis?

Not that I know of

Later chassis are stronger and fully boxed compared to early 70's frames

To me it all depends how much custom work your doing to the frame, if your doing coil conversions etc one you reduce the twisting effect on the frame and two you build in the reinforcement as you build it

going for leaf spring set up then there is loads of stuff on the net

Do you need to do for Australian conditions ?? Not sure never seen it needed here but does me you wont

I am reinforcing mine considerably, and also shortening the chassis.

especially considering as you say the extra load.

Mine would be easy to reinforce now as there is no engine, trans or diffs....
Ive had chassis cracks in my 6 and the hearse but as MC says they can be both avoided and fixed.
The thing about the Gal cracking is likely to be just the coating not rails, the thing is built to flex.
