Front mounted Holden 3.8L motor. I spoke to a wrecker this afternoon who will sell me one for $990.

It will be rear steered. So I'm on the hunt for 2 front GQ diffs, the guy who I buy my CVs off has 2 of them that he wants $200 each for, but they have factory centres, and no axles (coz I already bought them ) so I'd still need to spend a bit of money on them to finish them off. Not sure if they're worth it, or if I should hang around and wait for a set of second hand built ones to pop up.

Haven't started looking into hydro steer gear yet, but if I can pick up something second hand from someone I'll do that.

The motor and the suspension seat are probably my priority items, as I'll need them to start building the chassis around once I work out who's building it.

Nice one...

I would go rear steer from the get-go too if I could afford it, but won't do it until I can afford to do it right with CTM's and alloys (convert my rear Rockcrusher)... and there is the hydro steer to think of.

I'd be careful with a GQ steering diff in the rear mate - the rear is under a huge amount of pressure... if you can break them in a front application you will break them 5 times as easy in the rear.

990 is way too much for commodore junk. buy a whole running car for around 5 or 6 hundred. you'll be suprised how much of it you end up using other than just motor and box.
you won't get a nissan steering axle to survive in the rear.

It would be running the Hilux chrome moly CVs in it, but I see your point.

I don't know what other diffs could be used for rear steer that would be stronger but not cost a fortune. This thing has to be built on a very limited budget if I want to keep the Jee-Q

You'd probably get a VN/VP for that much, but I was hoping to get a VS/VT engine. I'm still looking around at wreckers, as a front cut would be better than just a motor and computer.

What do you suggest?

Is rear steer on a budget too much for a wish list?

unfortunately, yes.

the closest you'll get with japanese technology is 80 series cruiser cr-mo cv's/knuckles on a nissan housing/centre with some good quality inner axles. it'll still break too easy though.
by the time you stuff all that into a custom housing you are gonna be up around the same price as bringing in a junk steer D60 (if you can find one), and a stock D60 will still need better axles/joints to survive in the rear.

unimog stuff (or even rockwell stuff) is definitely the cheapest rear steer setup, but getting really hard to find.
