Default CRD Loss of Power

Hi All,

I've had my 2004 CRD QD Grand since new, it now has 31,000km's on it and is due for a service in 1,500km (sooner now!). A couple of days ago it got to about 50kph, then it would only accelerate very slowly, throttle was hardly responding. The motor was running, foot flat to the board and it was very very slowly getting to 60kph. It then ran fine the next day until the afternoon when started having the same problem again. I started it up this morning, engine revved freely to 4,000rpm sounded fine (not lumpy of hesitating). Took it out for a run and it got to about 50kph and was more or less unresponsive to throttle. I stopped it and followed the automatic transmission reset procedure and it worked great from then on, took it home and parked it. A hour later, went for another drive and the problem is back but another reset did not fix the problem. Through all of this the engine management light is on constantly (indicates a minor problem, not flashing which I understand means it is a big problem). I don't know where the problem is, as it revs freely in neutral but in gear it has a real problem with a road speed over 50kph, holding in a particular gear doesn't help either. It gets to about 1800rpm and that's where the problem starts.

I placed a call to the dealers service centre but they don't open till Monday. Has anyone had this problem or any ideas what it could be? Thanks in advance.

Cool

Peter, it could be the fuel filter partially blocked and not allowing enough fuel through to handle anything other than no load.

This sounds like either an O2 sensor or airflow meter failure. Both have happened to me (WG CRD), O2 sensor was at about 40000kms (1 year ago next weekend) ,airflowmeter failure at about 75000kms (about 6 weeks ago and it was like that when I picked it up after the service!) both times Jeep claimed they'd never seen it before....

It will be under warranty but both times my car was off the road several days waiting for the part to arrive in stock.

Call Jeep Assist to get it towed and at least you'll get a hire car for a day!

Graeme and Bomber, thanks for the feedback, very much appreciated. If I can find a fuel filter for it tomorrow I'll put one in, if not, off to Jeep for the scheduled service and they can work out if it is the filter, the sensor, the airflow meter or something else. Anyways it looks like a few days with out it and a tow.....thanks guys I'll post again later when the problem is resolved.

Well it's fixed thanks to the guys at Leo Muller, Jeep Assist, and a three year warranty..... Rang Jeep Assist, who explained the reason that it only got to about 45kpm is because it was in "limp home mode" which helps limit further damage and allows you to get somewhere to be repaired, but they still sent a tow truck anyway. The problems were, ECM had an internal fault, replaced. Boost pressure sensor had a short circuit, replaced. Poor factory crimp at splice 145 (under the battery tray somewhere) fixed. Goes like a diesel rocket again.....Hope this info helps others.

'Mazing, isn't it how this is the third boost sensor I have heard about to die and yet Jeep still tell people "they've never seen it before". Mine magically shorted itself out while sitting in the dealer's yard after the service and before I picked it up.... Dealer told me to "limp it home and limp it back here in the morning"!
