OK I would like to get back to this project soon...But here's a question......

I've got an engine that I have never seen/heard running....ie condition pretty much unknown asside from the previous bloke teling me it was a runner.
And I have a STRICT budget to work with.

So do I just fit the donk get it running and then worry about if it needs a rebuild or not?
Or do I strip it down & service the entire danged thing making the project FAR more drawn out due to limited time/funds??
Or where do I draw the line in the middle of these extremes?
Thoughts? Suggestions?

2c,
Static compression test
Sump off ~ Bearing check (bigs and mains)
Oil pump clearences
Rear main oil seal
Heads cold be done post installation if there is an issue there.

Yeah that sort of what I was thinking....
Start with a leakdown test,
Test the timing chin for slackness,
Dump the oil (naturally) and chek what it looks like (ie metal/water/etc),
Pan off and check bearings etc,
Rear main - that's a good idea.

My only concern is the body of the block was pretty much coated in grime....So I'm debating about the heads.....
I was thinking of just doing the head gasket & checking the heads and getting them cleaned up and refitted.... but then it probably makes sense to get it lightly shaved, then its makes sense to geth the valve edone at the same time and then before I've blinked I've spent a grand that I don't have....
And this is sorta m deliema.....is it worth bothering with or not......

Wink

if you drop the heads off to be recoed+heads shaved its only about $400-$500!
i'd be shaving the heads as much as you can the 360's need as much comp increase as possible!!
i'd be more worried about the bottom end as the heads can be pulled later a lot easier after fitting the motor!any second hand motor would be worth doing front/rear seals/rocker gaskets/oil/filters etc....
personally id never fit a 2nd hand motor that i hadn't at least driven!!its to much work for a back yard mechanic to have to do it twice.
ps-if it was me i'd sell your motor as a rebuilder($300-400)and find a good running motor that you can test drive/run that way you can here the oil pressure take up after starting see if there are any major leaks hear for lifter noise etc..etc....
whats a good runner worth say$1000...
(just my opinions/attemp to help!) cheers..dc..

Appreciate the candid advise.
I'm a glutten for punishment - So I've decided I'm gonna see if I can get this engine done

For the past few months it's been sitting on a temporary "bench", but on the weekend I mounted it on the engine stand so I can work on it more efficiently......
Will report back soon....
