Mine makes what I think is an awful noise, but Hammonds tell me they think it's just bearing noise. It's always in the back of my mind when I'm off the road but your story brings it a little closer to the front.
A friend has told me that replacing the bearings isn't a big deal and he could show me, but, that's assuming it is a bearing. What if it's the chain? $600 is probably cheaper than a rebuild is it?

Default transfer case

probably we got a price in australia for a chain and that was $600 but we got on the net and found one in america for like $78 usd and the postage to aus was $101 when converted in to ausd it ended up being $230 so we got it!! so i would say yeah look around and see what ya can get i would much rather pay $600 for a whole case then pay $600 for just a chain in aus. if you want the name of the wreckers i will find out for you but i will also give you the name of the web site we found the chain on. which happened to turn up the day after the case lost its oil all over the road!!! so we may have a chain for sale!!! big waste of $230 but ya get that on big jobs!!!!

Thanks for that. I think I'll just bite the bullet one of these days and drop it out and take it somewhere for them to check. I imagine a buggered bearing is easy to find and if all's well, the chain must be the cause!?
