Default Fraser Is - soft sand, bushfires...

The QWPS site says (last updated 23 Nov) that much of the island is closed due to wildfires. Any updates on this, anyone on the Sunshine Coast know how bad they were, what's left, what's still burning? We were planning Christams / New year there but now i'm wondering if it will be worth the effort.

Also, any advice on towing 2tonne of off road van as far as Dilli Village would be appreciated, is the beach too soft to get get a van that far at the moment? I know it depends on tides but the website paints a pretty bleak picture of driving conditions on the island as a whole at the moment.

its all good, friends of mine were just there
Really only a few remote spots on the western side that are closed off due to the fires,

if you go at the lowest tide you should be ok, hardest part will be just off the barge

You won't have any troubles getting to Dilli Village at low tide. The worst stuff at the moment is at Inskip as you get onto the barge, Eurong resort, Indian head southern cutting, and all up around Orchid Point (but that's way up north). When i was there a few weeks ago my mate (TJ Wrangler) towing a camper trailor became bogged pretty bad before we even got onto the barge, i have video of it . Not his fault but the T-case kept popping out (and it's a stock TJ) and i had to rescue him twice with my wrangler. While we were there a bloke in a 100 series and camper became bogged too. My mate also became another victim at Indian head (but not towing trailor this time) as his t-case popped out again. I also pulled out a tourist just north on indian head trying to get onto the inland rd back to the barge.

I didn't have any troubles, nor did my mate in the jimny but we all agree that the stuff at Inskip, Eurong and Indian head was what nightmares are made of.

I'll be over there from this coming friday the 8th for about 7 days
can give you an up-date report following that visit
believe the fires are, all but out and mainly up on the northwestern side
well away from where most people stay/travel
2 hours either side of the low tide, to dilli shouldn't be a worry
is 2 tonne the fully loaded weight though?

hey jeeps: what nightmare stuff are you refering to?
the soft sand I guess

Thanks, that would be great. We leave Melb on 20th, head to Gayndah for Christmas and then over to the island on Boxing Day all being well, down to Brissie for New Years Eve so the timing is good.

Yeah, pretty much. Base weight is about 1750kg plus water plus gas plus clothing & stuff for 4, I reckon we probably add about 300kg all up.
