Default Steel Prices -

Gday all.

I'd like to get your thoughts on this as a thread, and subsequently discussion on steel pricing that you have encountered as a 'cash sale off the street' purchaser. We could possibly even sticky it if it becomes useful. This thread's purpose is to help us work out as a group what sort of price we should be getting or asking for when approaching a steel merchant over the counter

I was thinking of starting a general list of what types of steel we/you would commonly buy. ?
ie:

Equal 90deg Angle 30x30x3 - $3.33 incl GST p/m
Equal 90deg Angle 30x30x5 - $4.93 incl GST p/m

Some steel places talk in $$$ per kilo, but usually that refers to offcuts or scrap in miscellaneous lengths / shapes ect.

I get my steel from here if I'm after box section, pipe or a specific size of plate etc http://www.edconsteel.com.au/ I'll check some receipts for prices. Just check cutting prices as these guys charge $5ish per cut on large pieces sometimes it's worth it sometimes not, I typically get the minimum cuts required to get it in the back of the Jeep

If I'm after small qtys or just some general plate etc I go more local (5 minutes up the road) Price depends on if the office is open the fabricators pick a number, normally a low one, the office work it out properly.

Cheers
Steve

havieng had worked for metalcorp steel a few years ago, unless your buying stuff in HUGE quantitys they not really going to look after you FYI most lenths of steel are 6mtrs in length for most flat and angle ( some come as 7.5mtrs)

RHS usually is 8mtrs in length, tube pipe is 6-6.5mtrs usually.

hope that helps
