Agreed, which is why I make most of my stuff in those sizes Although now I'm getting better at picking the right rod and amperage etc I'm starting to use thinner materials as well.

Also practice different speeds and doing small circles as you move the rod, this all helps finding out the best method for you to get a good weld. With those two pieces having a huge difference in thickness you can spend quite a bit of time on the really thick one and kind of stitch it to the thinner one, either way it's not the easiest piece to start with.

Get some guys together and get up here. Ran a very successful "welding day" with the JOCV not so long ago.
Went through Arc, Continuous Gasless and a decent MIG - and all had a "play".

Upshot of the day? All were impressed with the welder? NO!

Gotta get one of them self darkening helmets! Hehehe.

Weld toward with a stick, weld away with a MIG. Work a weld puddle - molten steel.

Just got an Auto Darkening with my new welder - LOVE IT!!!...Welder is ok too
