Default Diff replacement

Hi everyone, had my '96 XJ in for service today, 175'000km on the clock. Was told the rear LSD is worn out, will cost $1500 to repleace but if I leave it go and a bearing seizes it will cost me $3000.

Now $1500 is probably not a huge amount nowadays but has anyone else had this problem?, is it about the usual time when a LSD will go?....is there an alternative?....maybe take this oppurtunity to fit a locker??...any thoughts out there.

PS, the rest of the fourby got a clean bill of health, I really want to keep it but I wanna be realistic too.....is it worth spending this sort of money on an 11 year old Jeep?
Paul,
Brisbane.

from what the xperts tell me, the trac loc will shit itself after 100K.

I wouldnt bother replacing for that you can get a Detroit tru-trac for a comnparable price.

other option is in a few months Im selling my D35 with a tru-trac, 4.11s and disc brakes for about that price if you can wait that long

I'm no expert but my understanding of lsd's is they're just a clutch pack and have nothing to do with any bearings, so when the lsd wears out it just means your reverting to an open diff, seizing bearings sounds like bull to me

Bing.

If you re prepared to spend That $$ (or less) then get a locler or at least decent LSD (TrueTrac).
But if you do neither getting the bearings checked/ replaced proably isn't a bad idea.
