Kiwi, Mate I dont know what you do to your cars in NZ but over here 400 000kms is the minimum I'd expect out of a well maintained diesel.

Wallaby, Re read my post and you'll notice that I factor in the extra expense of the diesel., however this gap is reduce by the fuel saving factor.

Wallaby when was the last time you actually drove to Bourke, also your ignorance of rural Oz is astounding, WTF do you think all those bush patrols, cruisers and hiluxs run on, along with most farming equipment.

You show me a petrol with similar cliks and it would be an oil hungry gutless piece of shit.

i agree with Gildo its a good thing if they have sold it off to GM as VM produce one of the most unreliable diesels around eg. 2.4l Vm version found in landrovers and the 2.5l version in XJ hope the new 2.8 wrangler version is better for everyone that is one reason i went for the petrol been around in the states for years with little probs and i wanted a rubicon anyway. If you can get 400,000 out of a VM diesel you may be able to pick next weeks lotto number as well..... check the recent xj vm diesel post your lookin around 5-6000 to fixed cracked heads which is there main problem. Why they did'nt run with the commander mercedes diesel is beyond me?? 160kw 510 nm.
But i have always said if like you have got stick with it we are all jeepers at the end of the day petrol or diesel oh yes the xj/tj 4l petrol is one the best motors around and i would expect 400000 out of it and there not gutless either.

I had one of those 2.5 XJ diesels. It spent more time in the shop than on the road with oil pissing out most areas as well cracked heads. First sign is oil in the air hose. I've seen one post where it is happening already.

If the JK had the Mercedes V6 diesel and in a Rucicon I would have it now.

Now Stevil....temper, temper. Back of Bourke last month. Wait til you get stuck with dirty diesel, empty diesel tanks at petrol stations etc etc. Sorry, my math and your math dont come to the same answer. Oh, by the way I am from the country (edge of the Nullarbour) AND I have travelled pretty much every desert road that can be travelled using 2 wheel drive petrol engines and guess wot - the broken down vehicles I come acroos along the road ARE almost always diesels.

Stay happy.

The petrol engine in the JK is in fact the tried and reliable donk from the Chrysler Voyager. There seems to have been little by way of problems with leaks, head gaskets etc. and most are capable of well over 400000 km if properly maintained. I have had many a petrol engine and none of them have done less than 500000 km before I finally sold them. The key to engine life is good servicing and good oil. Petrol/diesel - who gives a shit really!!! Get a llife some of you blokes.

Come on this is the only thread that has a life.

You did for get diesel engines do not like sucking water in as well.

The other thing I like, is be able to back the JK into the garage, you could not do that in the CRD or your house was full of dity diesel fumes.
