The 05-06 model has a flow control valve (FCV), not sure about the 03 model.The servo (electric) driven butterfly plate on the FCV can be heard after engine shutdown as it snuffs the intake air flow. It closes for about 15 secs after key off then reopens by spring return for the next restart.

I'll have to go back to check the EGR valve in the engine room. On my old Patrol there was a vacuum hose attached to open it. Maybe there is no vacuum hose on the CRD...I will check that out asap. If no hose, then the mechanic told me BS.

Will check back with you guys later...

Just checked the EGR valve. There is indeed a vacuum hose going to it, coming from the little air filter. Mechanic was right, I'm happy again

I fitted a provent last nite (purchased from Wilmo - thanks).

Coincidenatlly after fitting I heard the noise you were describing and didn't have a clue what it was........found the source and didn't know what it did....... checked the forum today and my questions have been answered - thanks gang.
