Default Tyre size increases - legality issues

Hi all,

I know a lot of you guys have put larger tyres on your JKs. What exactly are the legal issues with this. I am in NSW and I heard you couldn't go bigger or smaller than 3% of the OEM tyre size (outside diameter) without it becoming unroadworthy. Is this the case? And if so, how have you guys who have put 33s+ on your JKs gotten around the issue? Engineer's Certificate?

Also, are there any potential issues with insurance? Is it just a matter of letting them know.

The tyre place gave me the usual "nah, its no worries" line but can I assume that if they are happy to fit them that its all ok?

Cheers.

mate i'm in perth. over here last i knew the only thing governing tyre width was that the tyres may not protude outside the vehicle mudguards, so really wide tyres mean mudguard extensions. there are also some regulations governing maximum tyre width on any given rim size. a tyre shop would know about it and probably tell you about it as their arse wouls be on the line for fitting them if anything went wrong. but that's in W.A. may be different in your town.

Yes. You should advise them and also get it acknowledged in writing as an accepted modification on your policy by them. Policies usually state vehicle must be roadworthy and inherent in this is compliance with all ADRs and State laws.

Get them to put it in writing on your receipt.

The new National Code of Practice for Light Vehicle Construction and Modification (NCOP) started from Jan 1st 09 and its states that your tyre size is allowed to be +50mm in diameter over stock.

Awesome, great news! Thanks heaps for the link SIM79.

So looks like we can all go up by 2" in diameter without having any issues.

but whats an extra inch!! Go the 35's. Most 35's are slightly smaller, say 34.7, take into wear and tear and bobs your uncle...you have a 34!!!!

Especially when 34s are nowhere near as common... We'd simply be rounding up, what's the harm in that?!?!
