Default diesel or petrol XJ

Hey all, just picked up a 2000 XJ turbo diesel, warn winch, IPF HID spotties, snorkel, LR tank, ARB bullbar, rhino racks. tow bar, trailer brakes GME3200, new BFG ATs 160ks. paid a dealer $7k for it . Question is do I pull the good bits off my '97 4.0 and sell it or pull the good bits off the 2000 and stick em on my '97?
Q. what's the story with these XJ diesel motors? dont know anything about em. what should i be checking on.Who's good with diesels in western Sydney?
Q. Petrol or diesel, whats better for towing a camper short/medium trips and medium level offroading and day trips?

PS can't keep em both
appreciate your feedback

Default i like petrol... thats only cause i got one.

hi ken, i bought a petrol xj purly because of the feedback i read on this site. at the end of the day it comes down to the indivdual choice. my dad has a diesel navara and i love diesel as they are more economical and have better towing with the turbo but the way fuel is at the moment the petrol xj is just as cheap to run. in the long run i reckon the petrol might be more reliable touring with but you will probably use more fuel around the place. definately a tough decision you have to make.

Wonder what you could sell the diesel engine for? When it costs $10k to fix a busted one I'm sure you could sell yours.
I too like diesel, but I wouldn't get a diesel XJ after reading some horror stories on here.

If the diesel checks out, keep it. Better for towing in my opinion, specially in sand and off road. Cheaper rego.

Newer interior and you get to change gears. good excercise for your left leg

you hear a few horror stories about diesel XJ's, but then again there are heap running around with no problems, just maintain em regularly and they will treat you right, they have more torque and don't have the same overheating problems of the petrol ones. If i were you i would be checking out the diesel one and if its good, keep it and just keep it maintained like i said and im sure it will be a good jeep. Kinda wish my missus could drive a manual

If it has a good service history and can find out if the diesel has been looked after then it might be worth keeping it. depends what you want to do with the vehicle - like touring etc etc to work out which one to keep.
