Or (as in my case) the plastic gets really brittle and you bump it doing some work and they break away from the core.

Been there done that, and aint it a bastard also slipped with a big screwdriver and stuck it thru the core on a brass/copper one, really makes your day. The problem with having a Jeep is you usually can't just get one off the shelf, though when I replaced the ZG's got the new one the next day but the courier stuffed it so had to wait another day. Was only $300 and it wasn't a Chinese one.
