That's the sort of thing you don't stuff around with. Get it fixed properly!

It does sound like the recall issue. There was a problem with the steering box. Methinks for the UKAUS markets which has the steering sitting on the other side of the engine bay.

Took it to the steelers and they fixed it at no charge.

I would take it straight to your nearest Jeep steeler as this should have been rectified a very long time ago by the owner at the time. The Steelers should have a record through Chrysler if your car was ever presented.

thanks guys, the steering box brace (the recall item) had already been done. There is a heavy plate welded to the right hand side of the steering box of the chasis. The crack I have is up further towards the track bar bracket heading towards the firewall. What happens is when you turn the wheels the whole bracket flexes making the steering very undriveable.
At the moment still waiting on a call from the tow truck fellas to pick the car up. If havent heard from them by midday will give the company a call.

Will keep you guys posted.

How can you tell if a steering problem has something to do with a chassis crack?

My steering has a knocking noise, but the knocking noise turns into a single loud bang if I turn full lock to the right.

I was told my trackbar was worn so I replaced that today but as I thought it made no difference at all to the knocking sound.

Is there a known problem with the XJ's? Could it be the steering box or a cracked chassis?
