Cool steroes in XJ

I am looking at replacing the standard radio unit in my 99 xj tdi
saw a head unit on ebay that some guy bought for his XJ but apparently never fitted as it didnt fit
can someone tell me the size or depth of the room that the stock unit has and takes up
thanks

Stock is a 1 1/2DIN a single DIN fits easily (Standard stereo size) but you need to get an adapter to fill the gaps around it, I got one years ago from JB Hifi but they had to order it in.

Cheers
Steve

There's a little space behind but not a lot. Heres a pic when i had mine out, the aluminium angle was siliconed in to support the rear of the radio.

Cheers
Steve

roby02, the stereos in the update XJs are very easy to remove. Just put the gearstick in 1-2, pull the dash surround off (just give it a tug with your hands), there are two bolts, take them out, pull the radio straight out and disconnect the antenna and wiring harness. The stock unit is 135mm, I think there is about an inch or so behind it for the harness.

Here is a pic of the adapter I took for someone else a while ago:

thanks guys and again Steve F
that gives me more of an idea of what i was looking for
and as for getting someone else to do it "there aint no fun in that"
only ever had a stereo ect installed by someone else once that was after some lowlife broke into the car i had at the time and destroyed the head unit trying to remove it the guys who fitted the new one (by insurance ) disconnected the power wire to the amps and ran it through the steroes amp wiring only problem was the stereo didnt put out enough power so i ended up removing and rewiring
