Default ZG MAJOR intermittent power loss

I just just completed a short trip of 300km and lucky to get home without the aid of a tow truck.
Every now and then the car coughs and splutters almost stalling at idle. the revs pick up and drop as if it is trying to correct itself.
when driving it hesitates and loses almost all power intermittently (dropping back to 10kmph or so) and if you plant your foot to the floor it backfires visciously through the air filter before coming good and roaring off at rapid acceleration, only to miss again when returning to normal driving.
but some times it has no sign of a problem and runs smoothly, albeit lacking a little in power .
And just now the Check Engine light is illuminated.
as you can imagine this is not confidence inspiring.........
any suggestions would be appreciated

One of your sensors has gone. No big deal, just a matter of finding which one it is. Try this site http://www.go.jeep-xj.info/ to get the error code from your dash and then using the same site or this one http://www.getahelmet.com/jeeps/tech/codes/ look up which sensor it is.

Thank you for the reply!
I have just checked the error codes. 12. 27. 21

Go Jeep deciphers the codes as such,

12 = disconnected battery..... yep I did do that.
27 = Fuel injector control circuit...Will need specialist diagnostics....Uh oh!!
21 = Oxygen sensor or circuit. O2 sensor or wiring faulty... where to look??

27 is really worrying I feel. I would like to be educated a little to know what to expect before I drive into a Jeep dealership!

Sounds like a faulty crank angle sensor, this often triggers other codes.

Haha we drive Jeeps to keep us on edge!!

Ask Rodgebone, he knows about the injectors, I think I mailed them off to Poly4x4 or something, cost about 200 to rebuild...

It worked for me and I had the same symptoms, but it might not work for you but they need replacing anyway I'm sure!!
