Not a cracked exhaust header? I believe they are kinda common on the XJs.

You might just have a vacuum leak, that'd account for the airy sound and running rough. Hunt around for a hose that's hissing while it's running.

Dont drive a XJ but my advice would be to
A) Flush out the alternator with water and get all the mud out
B) Give the started a quick clean out over the next couple of days
C) Talk to Gojeep the expert in XJ issues http://www.go.jeep-xj.info/ I Drive a TJ and still get a lot of my good info from him.
D) Once the Jeep is running at 100% give that puddle another shot and show it who is boss.

definately blown the head gasket, took the head off to have a look and it blew the back of the gasket out, need to get my mechanic mate to measure the piston strokes to check if the rods are bent or not. most certainatly will be investing in a snorkel in the near future....
