Diff pinion nuts are no place to use a rattle gun. Mark the nut and count the turns as you undo it with a breaker bar or ratchet bar. Then retighten The nut to the same position plus a fraction.
It is amazing the number of so called professionals who stuff up a simple job by using the impact gun.
Hope you sort it out ok.

There was no way in heck I'd be cracking that pinion bolt without a rattle gun - and I don't believe my mistake was in loosening it off with the impact - my error was being a spud and rolling that nut one turn too far without realising.

Gonna order crush sleeve, outer pinion bearing and pinion nut from RockAuto today and tackle it when the parts arrive. Guess I'll be picking up a dial-style inch-lbs torque wrench for calculating pinion preload also.

EDIT: Should clarify I had no intention of tightening the nut up with the impact socket, had a 1/2" breaker for that - only used the impact to remove the nut.

I gotta get myself an "/lb torque wrensh as well, let me us what you get and how much...

I've never been able to get the pinion nut off with a rattle gun yet, I use a breaker bar with a pipe for extra leverage in conjunction with a large pipe wrench to hold the yoke in place to prevent it from turning....

Well the best I've found so far is this one. It's a T&E Model 7290, 0-60 in-lbs deflecting beam type by T&E Tools. There is a damned limited selection in the range we need to be found via google.

I'm going to see if the workshop at work has one I can borrow (and maybe a bigger breaker/impact gun while I'm at it).

If I can't find anything better I might order that T&E wrench and let you know how it goes.

After I finished sooking yesterday I'm now actually excited to do the pinion preload - always wanted to learn more differential work Worst case I'll slap a new diff in I guess haha

My concern now is how I'm going to get enough torque on the new crush sleeve without a lift....
