Default Think I effed up my pinion nut...

Hey guys,

In the process of doing my pinion seal on the D35 I believe I have overtightened past the previous torque. I marked the nut rotation and took some photos of depth but like an idiot I did not measure the thread depth - and now I believe that I have gone almost a full rotation around further than I should have... I'm not 100% certain but the impact wont turn it any further and im 20 odd degrees short...

So! I'm thinking I need a new crush sleeve (perhaps a new bearing while I'm at it) and then I'll need to set the pinion preload using a torque dial gauge?

Does this sound right?

Gosh it's frustrating making such a stupid mistake and turning an hour long job into what im thinking is gonna put the jeep off the road for at least a week.

Appreciate the advice.

How does the pinion feel, if it feels over tight when you turn it you could have a problem, how does it feel compared to before you removed the nut, hopefully you've just adjusted out the wear in the bearings & it will be ok, if you can still feel the back lash between the pinion & the ring gear by turning the pinion lightly I wouldn't be to concerned about it

Haha yeah nah its solid. ******** Im' a spud.

On the bright side I can order pinion outer bearings, crush sleeves and pinion nuts for the D35 and the D30 for $80 priority delivered from RockAuto.

Guess what though? Can't undo the D30 pinion nut at all... even with 570Nm on my side.... I'm over this job.

1/2 rattle guns are over rated for duffs you need a decent 3/4 with plenty of air

it takes some serious force to crush the crush sleeve so I would have thought its unlikely that you have gone almost a full rotation more on the nut. you should have been replacing the nut and crush sleeve regardless.
My impact gun (granted not a very good one) was a long way off the force required to get correct pinion preload.
Note if your D30 is HP it should be a solid spacer not a crush sleeve.

just did the pinion seal on my KJ and did not use an impact wrench. Breaker bar and floor jack was all I needed. Need to keep checking pinion preload as you tighten it so you don't overdo it.
