You can buy the timeserts locally from
http://www.crosstools.com.au, yes they are dearer but the delivery is overnight if you are in a hurry. I've used these on one of my glow plugs very successfully.
If you need a good seal the timeserts are the way to go, if you don't need a good seal, a helical is a much stronger device to use.
I like you theory about the cover but this wouldn't explain the rear injectors to me, although they do seem to run a lot hotter overall due to their location. This may also be due to the inlet ports clogging up with EGR soot too, when I clean my manifold out the rear ports were far worse than the front ports. This would richen up the rear cylinders which would make them run hotter if memory serves correctly.
