Default 2.7 CRD injector hold down bolts and head removal.

It looks like i may have a broken injector bolt in the head as there is a hex head bolt holding the injector down. Also good news it is number 5 but a large access hole has already been cut so access may be ok. Has anyone had to remove broken hold down bolts? Can someone please tell me the length of a hold down bolt as I have not seen one out. Is it possible to remove the cylinder head with the engine in place?

What's holding the injector down then if the bolt is broken. maybe they were too tight or lazy to get the correct new bolt but realised they should not use an old one. Before removing he head shouldn't it be pretty obvious if the bolt is broken, you should be able to turn it in place pretty easily.

Thanks Fester. You are right. I do not know what has been done, or if anything is even wrong. But I am trying to get enough information to be ready for when I tackle the job. What sort of tool do you have for removing injectors? There seems to be 2 sorts on offer, slide hammers and a puller where you dismantle the injector. The other way mentioned was twisting side to side and removing by hand. What have others tried? Would still like the other questions answered.

If it happens to mine the plan is I'm going to drill the holes for access then take the Grand to the Bosch Centre here in Toowoomba and say fix it, which is something for me to do as I'm usually the only one that touches my CRD but after reading the fun and games some have, bugger it, I've thought, drop Jeep off and go fishing in the ute for a day or so till it's fixed.
The local Bosch joint has a good rep.

When I replaced my injector seals, one of the bolts (4) stripped the thread in the aluminium head while removing it. To re-thread it, we had to cut the metal above and bend it all back because no tools would fit through the hole. The metal is quite thin. When we finished, we spot welded it back together. I don't reckon you could pull the head off in place but I may be wrong. My mechanic just man handled the injectors out by twisting back and forward. The one with black death gave him some grief but he just lubricated it and took it slowly.

Most injectors if there is no problem will pop out very easily. Others may require a puller to extract the injector for the head.
