That is what I have just done with a WiFi only model which is cheaper than one with 3/4G. Not sure if you can do Google earth though but the others you can.

Looking at getting Westprint maps for our Big Desert run as the Hema shows not a single track in there! Spacial series in Victoria is supposed to be really good and used by the CFA and SES etc.

I use a garmin monterra ( has android on it ) so I can use garmin topo and app based maps ie hema ect. Works great for my use ( not the cheapest though) as I have also used it to navigate in the USA and for side country skiing in Canada as u can just Change the maps and keep useing the same device and it also has a camera and all that other fancy crap.

Cheers

sounds good but I am trying not to throw big money at the system cause when I did the thing is now dead and knowing now what I used it for I just don't use all the bells and whistles

Doesn't come with hema maps I use garmin topo maps which I put on the sd card. If I need real fine detail I use nexus 7 with ozi and hema maps among others, with an external gps receiver over Bluetooth.

I picked up a Garmin Nuvi 3597 with life time maps/traffic updates and Topo Aust/NZ today. Looks like a nice unit with some cool features.
Even set it up with a Wrangler as the pointer icon on the screen....
