Ok, i'm finally writing up a little report on my trans cooler/gauge setup. I've had it in for a couple of weeks, long enough to get an impression of how well it works. I've got a b&m 70268 for the cooler (
http://tiny.cc/4hrdg) and a speco plasma series oil temp gauge (
http://tiny.cc/duqhp) to keep an eye on the aw4. I've fitted the cooler in front of the radiator/ac radiator on the passenger side in front of the mechanical fan. The in radiator heat exchanger has been totally bypassed. The cooler came with a kit with just about everything i needed to install it, i only needed some hose clamps and some extra transmission hose. The speco gauge also came with a decent installation kit and the only things i needed to run the sensor in the transmission line were a couple of brass fittings from enzed. I installed the sensor in the outgoing line from the transmission to the cooler. The whole setup works really well, the highest temp i've seen so far (remember outgoing temp so the internal trans temp will be lower) is 70 degrees, which is pretty low. That was stuck in peak hour traffic with an ambient of around 15-16 degrees so it will be interesting to see how it goes in summer with ambients up to 40 degrees. Usually the gauge reads around 50-60 degrees which is pretty low (almost too low). One problem is that when i drive to work on the freeway at 5:30am the trans doesn't warm up at all. As soon as i am in suburbia and going slower the temp will raise a little. If the trans is already warm it will stay warm at freeway speeds. I'm going to have to look at fitting a thermostat so that the cooler will be bypassed when it is cold. I didn't want to run the fluid thru the factory heat exchanger as it will just run at close to engine temp which is a bit warm for my liking. I was also having occasional overheating problems wheeling in hot weather from the transmission dumping super hot fluid into the already hot radiator (all cooling system is new and 3row copper/brass radiator). Anyway that's enough for now i'll try and upload some photos if i can work out how to transfer from my crap ass phone...
