speaking of trailers, jeeps how does yours go with fuel, the reason i ditched mine for camping and went to the back of the jeep was i used double the fuel to tow mine, yours looks great by the way

I estimate the trailor weighs about 500-600kg's dry and maybe 900+ loaded. Much heavier than i'd like but eh, it looks sweet

Fuel economy is not too bad during hwy use as our last trip was 200klm to get there on the hwy. I reckon we used about 17-18L/100klm which is about 400klm per tankful so i'm happy with that.

However, i think i need brakes cause it tows like a pig. Once at speed it's fine and tracks straight, although it slows the TJ's acceleration down a lot. Maybe it's just that i'm not used to towing a slightly heavier trailor but on the way up i was carrying 60L water, 20L fuel and big esky was full and it was borderline scarey in a few spots on the bitumen The front wheels of the TJ locked up in a shopping centre carpark in the rain at slow speeds and that didn't fill me with confidence. My friend with an 05' TJ complains of the same 'front wheel lockup' when he's got the camper trailor on. After the trip on our way back i remembered that i have adjustable ranchos and firmed them up and with probably 110 kg's less of water/fuel/esky it was soooo much better. Didn't crash or anything!

I forgot to mention, since the last trip i've bought a higher towball tongue/hitch so the trailor is more level. It seems to be better under braking

Thumbs up

mine isnt that heavy and only a 7x4 but has a high toolbox on the front which would cause a lot of drag i notice it big time taking of to wen im working everywhere and go a few weeks with the trailer on than take it off it feels like someone bolted a monster supercharger on but with it on i use double the fuel but yours has had a lot more time and money spent setting it up nice job it looks the goods must say

jeep boy,
yes I built it and had the tent put together by Southern Cross Canvas.
It's frame is hot dipped gal and clad with checker plate aluninium. Heavy duty square axle with spring under and Alko off road electric brakes. Fully loaded it weighs about 750kg. I did think of the tent under the lid thing but have decided on another bed inside- sort of bunk style.
Jeeps,
It tows like a dream, but the Jeep could do with a ratio change, I'd like 4.11's. Forget about 5th gear! In '05 we did 5000k through SA, fully loaded with the three of us. For the whole trip we averaged 16l/100km, not bad I thought as most of it was dirt driving.
Cheers, Clint
