In addition to the info posted in this thread .... there is also a collection of threadlinks a few posts further down.

As there is lots of thoughts on whys, why nots, sizes, line routing, bypassing stuff, cooler before heater, cooler after heater etc etc .....

How about a collection of info in the one thread including links to past threads and posts on oil coolers.

I'll start with this.

The red and blue colours denote coolant temps,
The long thin pipes are the tranny line connections.

Very interesting,......I've got a ZJ Grand Cherokee Limited 4.0 , and it's got ( the original fitment) radiator which has the U.S. arrangement of in-tank auto trans fluid cooler on the COLD side - i.e. our passenger side -..........

I also noted that Natrad make an ALL METAL version of the XJ radiator.....I'll now have to check out whether they make one for the ZJ........ I thought I'd have to fork out big dollars for a custom made all aluminium type when my plastic tank finally carks it.....but with coolant maintenance schedules kept to religiously, it's lasted 13 years and 230K klms.....unlike the waterpump which seized up spectacularly last year 8K klms ago without ANY warning!

Those ones are the same style as the factory one going by the piccy.

Just tubes set in fins .... Probably be OK if the tubes are dimpled. ?

I liked the finned alloy tube coolers on e-bay .... http://cgi.ebay.com.au/NEW-18-ALUMIN...item483a248bbb

Hard to damage ... but not much point if they dont have an internal spiral to control flow for cooling ... pity

Havent used that type in your link but I have run two factory coolers which equal about 2/3 of the capacity of the e-bay one .... and found that setup to be barely adequate for general use .... and hopeless underload ... going by gearbox temps.

Hey carves,
Thats the one I'm using. Very easy to mount, strong as brick outhouse. I am worried though as to its efficiency. Although it isn't spiraled inside, those fins on the outside are, in my case anyway, replicated on the inside. I'm yet to ad a oil temp gauge, but that is coming soon. One thing for shore, it definately wont "restrict" flow ha ha, its cavernous inside

Yeah ... I thought one of those behind the "vented" bull bar would be good.

Small stones and stuff would just bounce off ... instead of flattening / holing the normal style cooler fins.

All the ones I checked out were hollow inside tho ... so the thing filled with oil which would cool against the walls ... but the cental flow would just pass straight thru with minimal cooling benefit.

Having the fins extended into the inside of the tube should make quite a bit of difference by comparison.

Any bends in the interior fins to tumble the oil around a bit ???

Some temps when you get your gauge in would be good.
