I also had a Chinese no brand cheap winch I only paid $315 for. I had it on my Commander for about 3 years and used it in anger more than 30 times. Please note this was mainly to recover mates stuck in bog holes, scary hill climbs etc and about 10 times for the Commander. That winch never let me down. Mind you it was a basic 12000 lb pull.
The Warn 9.5ti has a variable speed which is really handy and takes up very fast but water ingress through the clutch lever seal is such poor design. No damage and as you said I'm glad I pulled it apart when I did.

I was thinking of buying an Ironman 4x4 winch next time as I'd like to put my cheapy Chinese one back on my TJ. Trouble is I'm finding hard to justify spending close to $1K when this bloody $300 Chinese one won't quit. My only complaint about it is that it's a very slow pull.

I would argue iron man is a cheap Chinese winch. Just priced and marketed differently.

And I would totally agree with you which is why I haven't bothered.

Finally got my mud tyres fitted to my new rims. Extremely happy with the way it looks but I do need to extend the flares out an inch. The rears are flush but the side biters on the front stick out a little. I'd probably get away with it but would prefer to be as legal as possible.
