I have had 2 300D's, a 1980 update & a 1985/6 last of the w123's. The older one did over 2,000,000km. Great cars to work on, nothing goes wrong with them as long as you set the tappets once a year. Those iron headed diesels just kept on going. I have a pile of worn out disk pad backing plates, must be a foot high. I also have a 250TD w124, not as good as a 300D.

Don't blame german engineers.
Torx was invented by an american company (Acument intellectual Properties LLC.)- you have a license to produce the proper tools for torx application. No license - no tools according to spec.
Most of them fit very badly because they are not made to specs for a reason, otherwise you have to pay fines..
Get some Hazet, GEDORE or Snap-On tools- they still have the license and they do work perfectly.
The reason was as already mentioned the higher applicable torque ratings- and mountable with machines.

and guess what- Mercedes uses exclusively Hazet tools... You can buy complete basic sets for Mercedes and Jeep applications. very affordable
