Its for very steep & rough conditions when high first high is struggling. Good for pulling others out of a bog.
Wow LB, you were born with the knowledge of how and when to use low range. That's awesome. When I was born I just ate, slept and wore nappies.

I had to ask someone too, 8Track. Like you I acquire my knowledge through questions and not through a magical and freakish genetic pre-disposition to knowing everything already...

Cheers, Squire.

Agreed. Dealer was happy to show me how to use satnav and pair my phone to the Bluetooth, but as soon as I asked how the 4x4 system worked he looked like he'd shat himself...

It's very poor because 4x4 systems are getting more and more complex, plus each manufacturer dreams up different names for their features... It can actually be really bloody difficult to get a straight answer on how various modes/features actually operate, and when/where is the appropriate place to use them.

Best place to look would be in the vehicle manual.

I'm shit at teaching anything.

To me, it's more than just a really low ratio.

If you want to preserve your vehicle, the old saying goes 'As slow as possible, as fast as necessary'.

You wanna go balls out, at the risk of damage, then just have fun playing around.

It's a matrix of different trail conditions that makes me select 4Lo.
It can be all of the below, one of the below, or anything in between.

Steepness of slope, or, obstacle if it's high.
Rate of vehicle momentum estimated (low or high) to make it through, over, or past obstical.
Traction conditions.
Fuel economy over distance.
Preserve vehicle, or banzai fun, wooo hooo.
Will I probably need to reverse in slippery conditions, my NV247 doesn't activate the front in reverse.
Do the super slippery conditions prefer smoother gear changes.
Do I prefer wider ratio gear changes for this. Not jerky low and close ratio changes.

Etc etc

It's driving. OK. Just go by seat of the pants what feels right. IMHO, sooner rather than later.
