i mounted my UHF in the passenger side footwell up against the transmission tunnel using the existing bolts so no drilling required and it is convienent and out of the way.
I mounted the antenna on the passenger pillar by the front window using the existing bolts so it is up nice and high but i had to make up a bracket for it top sit on.

Works well

Here's mine and I have the mic just to the right and around the corner of the Power Outlet above my knee. I had a glass mounted aerial but it blew off so now I am working on option 2.

My marine UHF as some additional frequencies for international and US use. I wondering if a non Australian UHF uses the same frequencies as Australia.

I've got a GME 3440 and I've mounted it under the steering wheel. There is an empty spot there once you pull the trim panel off - I just made a small bracket to mount it level and it fits well - you put the panel back on and you can't see it at all. I can hear it really well too.

Davidd made a comment a while back that the spot in question gets really hot in his car and didn't recommend putting anything there. I checked it on mine after long drives (3 hours plus) with the heater on (because the heating pips are just off to the left) and it wasn't too warm at all - YMMV.
