Default What has everyone done with a UHF?

G'Day all!

We want to (finally) get an In-Car UHF for the Jeep as we are getting sick of the Handheld!

We were going to go down the path of a Remote Face Uniden Unit to get around the lack of a DIN Space (or any space for that matter) on which to mount a full sized radio.

Then I cam accross this on Quadratec : http://www.quadratec.com/products/96080_11.htm

This looks like a great solution, I particularly like the Mount on the Rear door!

Does anyone see any issue with Mounting the Actual unit in/on the dash? And does anyone have any suggestions on where we could mount a UHF where it's out of the way!

Cheers

The problem I see with mounting it on the dash is that unit from quadratec has to be the ugliest piece of... that I have ever seen! Also means it's very easily spottable from prying eyes who may want to break in and steal it for shits and giggles!

Be careful about buying CB radios from USA as they are all AM CB, not UHF. A licence is required to use UHF radios in USA. A Firestik is an AM antenna. Best prices I have found on the internet are from: http://www.prestigecom.net.au/

mate the popular choice on the forum seems to be a gme radio of some sort. i have the 3440, which has the controls on the handpiece. some use the split version with a small control panel and the radio under the dash. if you pull out the glove box and take off the dash panel under the glove box you will see a metal bracket to hold up the dash. zip tie your radio to that bracket and replace the panel and glove box. depending on your hearing you may or may not need an external speaker mounted on the dash, or centre console to make up for the radio speaker being hidden under the dash. i then ran the had piece wiring behind the dash and brought it out through the gap under the steering wheel. mounted the handpiece on the dashboard over the steering wheel. that worked for me so is one method. best place for aerial is mounted on bull bar at front. buy two aerials, one a 6db for country work(9db is too directional and pretty useless) and another for town or bush work between 3 and 4.5 db. i use a 3 and 6 db and they work for me. that should give you one option to think about anyway. good luck.

Had mine on the dash of the XJ for a few years and hated it. I got the Uniden remote head and mounted it in the roof centre console.

Ah! Excellent tip! Will take that into account (won't get the Quadratec one then, may buy the mount though).

Anyway, back to the gist, where have people mounted what unit in the JK's. When I say on the dash, I actually mean bolted to the dash somewhere (not necessarially on top of the Dash).

There's also a case for mounting under the seat and running some remote speakers? I have an old Uniden Sundowner which has served well which I could use in that situation!

Any ideas are most welcome!
